I don’t buy bad books but I do buy old books! Seriously, if I don’t think it’s a good book, it’s not going on our shelves.
I’m a little picky about what we read because it shapes my kids lives whether they realize or not. The language, the rhythm, the illustrations, the lessons, they remember it all. Especially right before bed.
So I tend to reach for books that:
• have beautiful, rich language (not just quick, choppy sentences) - and yes they take longer to read.
• tell a complete story with a clear beginning, middle, and end
• feel calm and comforting, not chaotic or super silly right before bed
• have truly beautiful illustrations… not slapped together and AI-looking, but thoughtful, timeless, detailed artwork
• are worth rereading a hundred times without making me lose my mind
A lot of those end up being older, classic books. Not because they’re more literary per se, but because they were written to be read aloud and you can see and feel the difference on every page.
I don’t want these rich, meaningful books to be forgotten, so we keep them alive in our home by reading them frequently!
And honestly… if I’m going to read something 400 times, it better be good.
What’s the go to bedtime book in your house?
