Reading about another long standing, family owned, small business closing today over raising rent, it’s time for me to say something.
We are gut wrenched about not having the choice to close Suburban Optical. Not long before we purchased this longstanding business, the building owners had doubled the rent. I saw the potential, knew the reputation, and decided to take on the legacy this optical offered despite the high rent. But two years later the owners decided to raise the rent again, over 50%, siting Dallas retail space warranted this and we were given a month and a half notice. Struggling with an uncertain economy and tariff threats, the business since the election wasn’t strong enough to warrant nor pay for a move, the time wasn’t given to research and find another space, there was no way to be profitable if we’d stayed.
It’s been one of the most difficult moments of my life having to close this shop. I want to sincerely thank our loyal customers that brought the short success and the opportunity to serve you. I don’t think any of you doubted my services or the heart & passion I have for helping you see and look great. I hoped for another generation to serve you as you’d continued shopping with yours.
There are not a lot of places that can match the quality and services, I recommend Dr Judith Kirby, MD and her optical for your vision needs.
Many of you I consider friends, I appreciate all of you and I miss seeing you, every day.
