My Godmother Rose taught me so many incredible things. And she is the one who bought me my first fuffy fufu princess dress. My momma used to dress me like the da brat ya'll two big afro puffs, oversized clothes looking like criss cross. For easter sunday when I was 5 years old my aunt Rose bought me a gorgeous pink frilly dress with white lace, pearl and layers. In this way she taught me the transformational power of fashion. I put that dress on and it was like a Sailor Moon transition -- aaaaaahhh ---- PRINCESS ACTIVATED. 😆😆😆

SEGMENT THREE: LOVE BLACK PEOPLE - Think soft, romance, flowers and femininity and a reflection of the Mercy, the Rahma of Allah. It's a color story filled with rich tones. I imagined this segment as a bride and her wedding party.

In my vision for this collection this looks represents not only the bride but also that first dress that she bought for me that changed my world!

Yall know i went through it!! Fighting for my life trying to get the exact shade of rust orange for this color story... even burned up my fabric trying to dye it 🤦🏾‍♀️😆 it was worth it Carla J Strickland turned it out!!

SEGMENT THREE: LOVE BLACK PEOPLE - Think soft, romance, flowers and femininity and a reflection of the Mercy, the Rahma of Allah. It's a color story filled with rich tones. I imagined this segment as a bride and her wedding party.

Its dedicated to my Godmother, Rosetta Johnson— Can I call you rose? I would describe her as the ultimate embodiment and epidtime of femininity, romantic energy, dripping in faith and religious commitment. I sometimes cry because I can't remember the sound of her voice. It feels like my mind is betraying my heart.

My aunt Rose taught me so many incredible things. A deep religious grounding and base.

She also gave me a vision of Black love and the Black nuclear family. Allowed me to experince first hand what it could look like to have a Black family with a husband who is kind, present and nurturing - not a piece of a man just to be able to say I got a man - a good Black man who poured into us and made us feel safe and welcomed. I wasn't his child, hell I wasn't even his stepchild, and yet he was my father. I remember playing on Mt Elliot. The garages used to all face the alley and all the dads would sit and chill in their garages while the kids would be running up and down playing, completely safe because of the presence of protective Black men.

SEGMENT TWO: INTELLECTUALIZE BLACK PEOPLE -

The smart sleek collection that is tailored yet a bit reminiscent of the Idlewild aesthetic. We are not asking for handouts, pay us what we deserve, and get out our way!

This segment is inspired by my Aunt Sandra.

I call her my business woman, the CFO, the fiscal icon not because she ever worked a corporate job or owned a business, but she had this indescribable ability to make the math, math. Everything always added up, even when the resources didn't.

My aunt Sandra K Jones - the epitome of elegance! Stoic, stunning, proud dark skin Black woman. I used to sit in the corner of the hallway and watch her get ready. Putting on her makeup, doing her hair, and styling her hat. It was a whole production: vibing to the music. Through all of my admiration, what I didn't know in that moment was the internal revolution and unlearning it took for her generation to go from "with your Black ass" where Black is an insult, a degration of your intellect, your worth and capacity - to "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud!" I am calling her segment 'Intellectualize Black People.

Above being the fashion mogul, she is the family archivist; to this day her walls overflow with beautiful hand made collages meticulously preserving the family records in photographs. She is the businesswoman, sharp as a tack yet smooth as silk! When I think about all the stories and experiences I could share, it had to be the one that made us family. Her and my mom met and became best friends because I was a greedy kid. We lived in this apartment building. I was maybe 2 or 3 years old, and everynight after bathtime. My mom would take me out the tub wrap me in a towel and go let the water out, by the time she turned around - BOOOMMM - I'm out running down the hallway, following my nose to collard greens, smoked turkey neck and black-eyed peas. By the time I made it to her door I'd lost my towel. She'd say, "Why do those knocks sound so low?" She open the door and let the naked toddler go straight to the dinner table. Eventually, you'd hear my mom's voice roaring down the hall, LaTerry? LaTerry? And just like that they were locked in for life!

Girl to think this was your first runway show is crazy to me. You so completely bodied everything I wanted this look to bring, stoic yet joyful. ❤️
