Lamu Old Town has been around since 1370, and in all that time it’s never made room for cars. The alleys are too narrow and the stone buildings too close together. Donkeys and hand-pulled carts, known as mkokoteni, have stayed the main way to get around. Dhows take over between the islands where the donkeys can’t. It’s one of the last places you’ll see a whole town run this way, and it’s part of what makes Lamu feel so untouched.
