SERIES 10 | RELICS |
An exploration of my experiences finding myself in the spaces between the grim blandness of manufactured suburban life and the grit of the city. DC and its suburbs are a unique slice of the American dream, manufactured optimism that fades at night under flickering fluorescent lights over empty parking lots, less a dream more a myth. A place where the uniform reigns supreme, the conformity and the polish shaped how I interact with clothing. Subverting familiar shapes and concepts. It captures Relics, old ideas of the past shaping our modern world. That environment gave birth to movements like hardcore which shape me to this day. Relics finds me referencing my last years living in the city, the emergence of post punk paired with early 2000s minimalism as the setting for the season. Military jackets, M65, F2, make their appearance in fabrics like cotton metal twill or poly silk with metallic parachute accents, or lyocell linen, takes my personal uniform when I was in my early 20’s. A graphics program that relies on my own past of making fliers for shows, printing and manually manipulating. Suiting cut in mohair/wool with a double wrap belted trouser. Dinner shirts cut in crisp poplin with abandon car graphics, a moto jacket in a beautiful hair on cowhide, bootcut trousers in a lustre tropical wool with denim details, and shadow plaid western shirt and jackets. All paired with either our custom Vans slip ons or Sk8 Hi shoes, footwear I grew up in. I shoot the collection seasonally in Paris as the juxtaposition of Paris suits the subversive approach to the collection. Fittingly DC, was designed by the French, and Paris itself was meticulously planned, a natural home for JKEEFER.
