The Greater Rhea is the largest native bird in South America. They are flightless and stand about 3-5 feet tall and can run up to 35 mph. the spring and summer breeding months, adult males become solitary and highly territorial, while females form small, tight-knit groups. In the winter, their social dynamic shifts entirely; males, females, and juveniles band together to form massive migratory flocks of 20 to 100.

We saw this adult Rhea cross the road and lead a whole flock of young Rheas (see video in last slide) to safety.
