On the night of April 26, 1777, a sixteen-year-old named Sybil Ludington rode forty miles through Putnam County, New York, alone, in the rain, to muster her father's militia regiment.

The British had raided Danbury, Connecticut, burning warehouses and military supply depots. Her father, Colonel Henry Ludington, needed his 400-man regiment assembled and ready by morning. Sybil rode through the night, knocking on farmhouse doors across the county. By dawn, the regiment was assembled. She covered roughly twice the distance Paul Revere rode on the night everyone remembers.

George Washington personally commended her for the ride. A statue stands at the end of her route in Carmel, New York.
