SAMIL Natural Fibres

SAMIL Natural Fibres SAMIL is an innovative South African Company that specialises in the production and processing of Mohair

SAMIL originated in 1965 when a Bradford textile trading company opened a subsidiary company called International Mohair Topmakers (PTY) Ltd in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in what was then and still is the centre of the world mohair industry. Over the years there have been many changes in the business, moving from greasy purchasing and then commission combing both abroad and in South Africa, bef

ore opening its own combing mill, Border Combing Company, in 1987. In 1992 South African Mohair Industries Limited (SAMIL) was formed. Primarily a mohair trader and processor, SAMIL’s ambitions have reached far beyond this activity, and it now sees itself as the link between mohair producers, processors and consumers.

A bouclé yarn spun to catch air and reflect light. A refined interplay of texture and light. The loop structure gives loft without weight. Mohair's lustre catches light along the curve of each loop.

Charting the course of colours. Every tapestry at Stephens Tapestry Studio starts as mohair, hand spun into a hank, then dyed and hung to dry. Mohair holds colour without dulling it, which is why it earns its place in these works. From there, a team of 30 women weave original designs into tapestries that hang in museums and private collections.

A kid Angora goat grows whilst roaming the veld and a good amount of sunshine, nutrition and care are needed. A pull over like this takes the evenings it takes to knit a future heirloom. Luxury is never hurried.

In this regent pullover designed by Eunsang & Nick | Mister Na Knits , two of our yarns are held together to create an all season staple. Kid mohair with merino for the structure that holds the shoulder line. Kid mohair with mulberry silk for the soft surface that catches the sun’s glow. “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” - Maya Angelou

The latest Samil collection is an expression of creativity through fibre. A refined interplay of texture, colour and composition, bringing together carefully considered yarns for those who value luxury materials and distinctive design.

Rooted in the richness of natural fibres, the collection invites a more considered approach to making, where the quality of the material is as important as what it becomes.

South Africa marks National Women's Day on 9 August.

At Samil, women work at every stage of the process. Beyond our mill, women-led studios and businesses across the country weave, knit and design with the fibres we process and the yarn we spin.

A fibre is only as good as the hands it passes through. Today we recognise the women whose skill and hard work carry mohair from fleece to finished textile.

Luxury is increasingly defined by what lasts. The pieces that are kept, worn in and handed down are built from fibres with inherent qualities like the lustre of mohair, the resilience of wool, the drape of silk. This vest is crocheted from yarn spun at our mill in the Eastern Cape. For designers and brands creating pieces meant to be treasured rather than replaced, the story begins in the yarn. Winter in the Eastern Cape smells like citrus. This scalloped knit picks up the citrus palette, like pith and peel and winter light. A soft orange, chunky base, with a strand of ecru and a strand of yellow. Hand-knitted in Samil's chunky kid mohair, merino, and silk roving yarn, finished with strands of brushed and bouclé kid mohair and silk. Sweater pattern designed by kolibri by johanna.
