Here's the thing that took me embarrassingly long to figure out, so I'm handing it straight to you. One wash does not clean nappies. It kind of just swishes the mess around and spreads it more evenly, which is really not the goal.⁠

The routine that actually works is two washes, every time. First a short prewash or rinse to shift the bulk of the wee and poo. Then a full, long main wash with a proper dose of detergent to get them properly clean. Prewash, then main wash. Not negotiable around here.⁠

This is honestly the number one thing people new to cloth get wrong, and it's almost always behind the smells or the nappies that never feel quite fresh.⁠
