Wachiay Studio Wachiay Studio is a creative hub, education centre, and screen print studio We are more than just a ‘silkscreen’ shop.

As a creative hub, we work closely with artists and entrepreneurs to bring their visions to life. Through education and training, prototyping new processes on challenging materials, and contract printing and fulfillment, we help people unlock the power of print to create successful small businesses. As an education hub, we provide a wide variety of training programs from basic to advanced. This in

cludes bringing specialized workshops to elementary and secondary schools, hosting evening and weekend introductory courses, and supporting individualized learning for those looking to advance their screenprint practice. As a commercial screenprint shop, we source and print garments, posters, fine art prints, and a range of materials including wood, plastics, metal, glass, drums, and hides for a wide variety of local artists, regional retail and manufacturing businesses, clubs, and schools. With the ability to connect art to enterprise, we believe the process of screenprinting has a greater purpose than just making cool t-shirts. Wachiay Studio operates using the principles of social enterprise, meaning our activities, and any profits, support our community’s success. Our mission is to support small-scale artists and entrepreneurs, particularly those living in rural and remote areas, to create capacity and self-sufficiency that bolsters local economies and supports healthy communities. Our core mandate is to promote, celebrate and collaborate with Indigenous artists and peoples. Wachiay Studio operates in the traditional lands of the K’ómoks and Pentlach First Nations, including Sathloot, Sasitla, leeksun, Puntledge, Cha’chae, and Tat’poos.

We had a great Intro class this weekend. It leads into the first Artist Residency this week, with Dominique Desbiens from Montreal, and local artist/printmaker Lauren Correia.
In the videos, some of the other students came from Nova Scotia and Ottawa.
We want to thank our partners on this. Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada , Comox Valley Art Gallery, and of course Wachiay Friendship Centre.

If you are interested in learning to screenprint or upgrading your skills, sign up on the website for classes in August and September. Residency artistswill have a group show at the art gallery. In the fall. We have 6 more artists visiting from across Canada, paired with local artist. Going to see some incredible printmaking. Enjoy.

Whether you are new to screenprinting, want to get back into it, want help starting or growing a print studio/business: this is the course for you.
In 2 days you will gain, through hands-on practice, a basic understanding of the 8 components of the process, and then complete a print project on the second day - poster, art print, textiles...we have people who have printed ceramics, leather, glass, metal, drums, wood....plus each student gets a membership in screentheworld.org, where they can find plans and video instruction to build simple studio equipment, and learn how to use it - vacuum table, t-shirt jig, exposing frame, and washout booth.
